Here at Surge Energy, we're always keen to stay on top of what's happening in the heart of Australian agriculture. We recently came across some important insights from Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) that really highlight the challenges and opportunities facing our regional communities and, importantly, our farmers.
A recent study by FCA, released at their sold-out Farming Forever National Summit, surveyed 618 farmers across the country. The findings paint a clear picture of what's on the minds of those on the land.
Climate Change: The Top Concern
Unsurprisingly, climate change has emerged as the number one concern for Australian farmers, with 57% of those surveyed naming it as the greatest threat to agriculture. This is up from 55% in 2023, showing a growing awareness and impact. It's not just a feeling; 93% of farmers reported experiencing at least one extreme weather event in the past three years. We're seeing more unpredictable rainfall, increased drought conditions, and generally unsettled growing seasons. This makes it incredibly tough for our dedicated farmers to plan and operate effectively.
Rising Costs and Bureaucracy
While climate change takes the top spot, rising costs (15%) and bureaucracy (16%) are also significant concerns. These factors, combined with the impacts of extreme weather, create a challenging operating environment. For family-owned farms, these pressures can feel immense, impacting profitability and the ability to invest in the future.
The Clean Energy Shift: A Path Forward
But here's where things get really interesting. The FCA study also revealed that a significant majority of farmers are already embracing the clean energy transition:
70% of farmers have already invested in emissions reduction measures, including initiatives like improving soil health and adopting cleaner energy solutions on-farm.
A substantial 67% plan to expand climate-smart practices, showing a clear desire to adapt and innovate.
Crucially, nearly 80% of farmers support urgent updates to energy infrastructure and regulations to ensure they can benefit from the clean energy shift.
Even more encouragingly, 65% of farmers are looking to produce and store clean energy on-farm.
This is fantastic news! It tells us that farmers are ready and willing to be part of the solution. They see the potential for renewable energy, like solar microgrids, to not only reduce their environmental impact but also to tackle those rising energy costs and gain greater energy independence.
What Does This Mean for Regional Australia?
At Surge Energy, we believe that empowering farmers with clean, reliable, and affordable energy is key to a thriving regional Australia. Investing in on-farm renewable energy solutions, such as solar power and battery storage, can significantly reduce a farm's electricity bills. This frees up capital that can be reinvested into the business, whether that's for new equipment, expanding operations, or even adopting new technologies like farm robotics and automation.
The desire for energy independence is strong. By generating their own power, farmers can shield themselves from volatile grid prices and ensure a consistent supply, even during extreme weather events. This reliability is vital for critical operations, from irrigation pumps to processing equipment.
Bridging the Gap
While farmers are eager to adopt these changes, the study highlighted barriers like outdated infrastructure, a need for trusted advice, and clearer government policies. This is precisely where Surge Energy comes in. We're committed to providing clear, accessible information and expert guidance to help farmers navigate the transition to renewable energy. We're passionate about building a future where regional communities are powered by clean energy, ensuring our agricultural sector can prosper for generations to come.
It's inspiring to see farmers leading the charge in sustainability and innovation. We're excited to support them on this journey and help unlock the full potential of clean energy for Australian agriculture.
